Dear Parents,
The beginning of school is such an exciting time! It’s full of new beginnings-new surroundings, new friends, new experiences, new skills, and new challenges. Please take time to discuss each school day with your child. Your constant interest will play an important part in your child’s learning success.
My name is Mrs. Kimberly Riley, and I will be your child’s teacher this year. Because I will be spending a great deal of time with your child over the next few months, I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about myself, both personally and professionally. I am married to John Riley, a former grant writer and researcher at HDC in Caro. We have two children, Johnny, almost 28, and Victoria (Tori), age 26. We live near Millington.
After graduating from LakeVille, I attended the University of Michigan-Flint. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education in December 1987. I majored in social science and minored in math. In 1991, I went back to UM-Flint and added an endorsement in Early Childhood Education. In June 2000, I earned my Master in the Art of Teaching degree from Marygrove College in Detroit. I have taught for 32 years in many different jobs. I have taught 3rd/4th split; 6th grade science, social studies and art; 1st grade for one year; art for one year; 2nd grade for 4 years; 3rd for 22 years and elementary music for two years. I greatly enjoy teaching and working with my students.
I would like to welcome your child to third grade. I am expecting a good year ahead as we get to know each other. As you are probably aware, third grade is a very big step up as the children begin assuming a much greater responsibility than in years past, particularly in the organization and completion of their assignments.
Following are explanations of classroom procedures, which I feel you should be aware of in order to help your child do his/her best this year. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at anytime. I do use the Remind app which allows us to text back and forth. To join my Remind group, please send a text to the number 81010 . Text this message: @kimri. You are also welcome to email or call me at any time. I will do my best to return the call as soon as possible. I’ll be glad to hear from you at any time.
Homework Policy: I try to give adequate time to complete class work at school. Class work time is as quiet and free from distractions as possible so that they may have every chance to complete the assignments in school. There will be times when your child will need to bring home unfinished assignments. These assignments should be returned the following morning. Reading for at least 20 minutes should be part of the nightly homework.
Grading procedures: This section will be revised as our new grading policy is developed.
Absent work: If the child is going to be absent for more than one or two days, please call the office and arrange to pick up absent work. This work is due back to the teacher the equal number of days to the number of days absent (3 days absent = work due 3 days later) unless other arrangements have been made with the teacher.
Parent Volunteers: I love to have parent (or grandparent) volunteers in the classroom. I can always find something for another adult to do. Please send me a note, text, or email if you are interested.
Snack Policy: We will be having snack every day. Please do not send any drinks other than water. Try to limit the snacks to healthy food. Popcorn, crackers, ½ sandwich, fruit, fresh vegetables, or something similar would be fine. Reminder: We are a peanut free building. (Birthday treats may be sweets or healthy.)
Discipline Policy: I have 5 simple rules that the students are expected to follow that we will discuss the first day of class. These are the schoolwide positive behavior rules. There are consequences and rewards which will also be discussed with the students.
Supplies: I have some of the supplies your child will need for this year. However, groups will have to share my supplies. If you do send in school supplies, please make certain that your child’s name is on EVERYTHING in permanent marker so that there are no disagreements about ownership.
● 1 hard cover composition book (100 pages) ● Whiteboard markers (Expo low odor) and a sock to use as an eraser ● 1 ½ - 2 ” Binder with clear cover ● 4 spiral wide-ruled, single subject notebooks -- Red (Math), Green (Science), Blue (Social Studies), Yellow (English Language Arts) ● 4 two pocket folders with prongs –Red, Yellow, Blue, Green ● Crayons, colored pencils, or washable markers and 2 Highlighters ● Box of pencils (2 must be sharpened at all times) and erasers ● 1 zippered binder pouch (to hold pencils) ● Glue stick and scissors
I would appreciate a couple of boxes of Kleenex from everyone. It is amazing how quickly we go through tissues when cold and flu season arrives! Clorox wipes are also useful if you wish to donate those.
Teaching is more to me than just a job. It is a commitment I take very seriously. My mission as a teacher is to help your child develop a positive self-image and help him/her to reach his or her full potential this year. I hold high expectations for your child and I will do all that I can to help him or her to meet those expectations.
My teaching philosophy is that I don’t just teach academics. I teach students-I teach your child. Your child deserves my full respect and understanding, and I will strive to give this to him or her in all interactions. In return I expect cooperation and respect from your child. Once again, if there are any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me. I feel it’s important to maintain good communication with parents at all times. I am glad to have your child in my class, and I am looking forward to a wonderful school year working with you and your child. Between us, I’m sure we can make your son or daughter’s experience a complete success.
Sincerely,
Kimberly A. Riley
